We drove through the Victory Basin on the way to Lake Willoughby from Groton State forest. Fantastic views from the River Rd at Damon Crossing. We also met a group of friendly bikers on the way. It was fun driving on the unpaved roads. Highly suggest to carry insect repellents. We visited in spring and were literally swarmed by all sorts of insects.
Very neat boreal ecosystem. Don't expect maintained trails or anything else. It's a place for those who want big woods and no development.
DRIVE AT YOUR OWN RISK. There is no maintenance of the road leading to the trails; none whatsoever. Took my Subaru halfway down the "road"; scratched on all sides by over grown bushes, and battered underneath by ever present boulders; and then finally found a section wide enough to turn around and GTFO. I'm sure it's gorgeous once you get to the trail heads, but you'd best bring a Jeep or other "off road" vehicle. No amount of natural beauty is going to entice me to destroy my car just to see it. Victory Forest is a 'No Thanks' for me.
